Marriage equality advocates have called on State and Federal Liberal and National MPs to follow the lead of Queensland Opposition leader, Campbell Newman, by supporting marriage equality.
Australian Marriage Equality spokesperson, Alex Greenwich, welcomed Mr Newman’s support for allowing same-sex marriages.
“Mr Newman represents a growing number of centre-right leaders who have rejected the politics of division and see marriage equality as a fundamental issue of decency and equity”, Mr Greenwich said.
“Allowing same-sex couples to marry is not about left and right, or us and them, it’s about allowing all Australians the same opportunities in life.”
Mr Newman is the first state Coalition leader to support marriage equality.
“We call on other leading Liberal and National MPs to demonstrate their support for equality by following Mr Newman’s lead”, Mr Greenwich said.
Last year Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, also announced she supported reform.
Mr Greenwich: “Queenslanders can be proud that they are going into the next election with leaders from both parties putting politics aside, and agreeing with the majority on this issue”.
Mr. Newman is the 3rd state oposition leader to announce support for marriage equality in 3 weeks, following on from John Robertson in NSW and Daniel Andrews in Victoria.
