NSW Labor has voiced its support for the introduction of same-sex marriage in Australia, but avoided a vote on the issue after opposition from a key right-wing union.
A vote on support for same-sex marriage had been expected yesterday, but the party’s general secretary, Sam Dastyari, instead moved to refer it to Labor’s national conference in December.
It is understood the decision followed indications from delegates with the socially conservative Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees’ Association, that they would vote against it.
