Former Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie, wonders if his opposition to same-sex marriages is “out of touch with community attitudes here and in the US”:
Last Sunday gay and lesbian couples from across the US descended on the state of New York to legally exchange their vows after it became the nation’s sixth and largest state to recognise same-sex marriages.
Most attention focused on New York City but ceremonies took place in many places, including 46 couples at Niagara Falls in upstate New York who exchanged their vows en masse. A further large wedding gathering took place on Long Island on Tuesday, and the ceremonies continued throughout the week.
Sunday night’s television news out of the Big Apple was dominated by happily smiling gay couples celebrating their wedding and a new-found legality. Of course there were some dark clouds on the horizon on Sunday when thousands of protesters opposing same-sex marriage marched in New York, and on Monday a lawsuit challenging the law was filed. Additionally, most couples from out of state will not have their marriages recognised when they return home.
