A new poll conducted by Roy Morgan Research has shown support for marriage equality is as high as 68% (details here). This poll shows that support for reform has increased since Australian Marriage Equality (AME) commissioned a Galaxy poll which put support at 62% in October last year (details here).
AME’s National Convener, Alex Greenwich, has welcomed the poll: “following the Galaxy Poll last October many Australians have continued the conversation about marriage equality, and we are encouraged that more and more Australians are opening their hearts to ending discrimination in the Marriage Act”.
MPs are set to report back to to Parliament on what their constituents attitudes are toward marriage equality on August 24th, and Mr Greenwich hopes that both the quantity and quality of support are communicated “as this poll demonstrates a growing majority of Australians support marriage equality. We also hope MPs take the opportunity, on August 24th, to explain to the Parliament why so many mums, dads, couples, and community leaders feel so passionately about gay and lesbian couples being treated equally by the law”.
The poll follows a weekend when the ACT Labor Party passed a motion of support for marriage equality and rejected civil unions as an alternative (details here) . It also follows the release of a survey conducted by Shadow Treasurer Joe Hockey that put support for marriage equality at 78% amongst young voters in his electorate of North Sydney (details here)
