Equal Love Canberra has called on the ACT Government to follow Tasmania’s lead and pass a motion supporting marriage equality.
Yesterday the Tasmanian House of Assembly passed a motion calling on the Federal Parliament to allow all couples to marry, regardless of the gender of the parties.
“Yesterday’s historic vote in Tasmania shows that the momentum for marriage equality is stronger than ever, so it’s time for the ACT Assembly to follow their lead and do the same,” said Equal Love spokesperson Ridah Hassan.
“Polls show that support for marriage equality in the ACT is as high as 73 percent, so there is no excuse for delay.”
“The ACT Government has legislated for civil partnerships in the past, but if it does not pass a motion supportive of marriage equality now it will risk falling behind.”
Yesterday, spokesperson for the Tasmanian Gay & Lesbian Rights Group, Rodney Croome AM, said it’s time for other states and territories to follow Tasmania’s lead.
“If Tasmania can do this, the other states and territories can do it too,” Mr Croome said.
Ms Hassan said that a bill currently before federal parliament aimed at amending the Self-Government Act is not relevant to this issue because all states and territories currently have the right to pass motions in support of marriage equality.
“In the lead up to the Labor Party’s national conference, it’s vital that all supporters of marriage equality continue to keep up the pressure on the ALP”
Equal Love invites all supporters of marriage equality across Australia to head to Sydney to protest outside the ALP National Conference this December.
NATIONAL CONFERENCE RALLY DETAILS: 12pm, Saturday December 3 at Hyde Park North (Sydney, NSW)
