Have your say on the ALP Draft Platform now
The Labor Party has just released its Draft Platform for consultation and it’s available for comment until 5pm this Sunday, 9 October. This is the document that sets out the major policy positions of the party, and will be debated at the National Conference in December. This is your chance to tell Labor why you support marriage equality.
Marriage equality not included
The Draft Platform reaffirms “Labor’s commitment to maintaining the definition of marriage as currently set out in the Marriage Act” (clause 120), and just rehashes the current position supporting a “nationally consistent framework” for relationship recognition.
Labor members and supporters are invited to comment on the Draft Platform. To make your submission, click here and select “Chapter 9: A fair go for all Australians”.
Talking points
Some suggestions for what to say in your submission:
- Why is marriage equality important to you?
- Why should the Labor Party support marriage equality?
- How is marriage equality good for families and society generally?
- If Labor supported marriage equality, would it make you more likely to vote for it?
- Has Labor been successful in achieving a “nationally consistent framework” for relationship recognition, and why do we need a new “national framework” when we already have one called marriage?
- Is a civil union scheme an acceptable substitute for marriage equality?
