What really gets you enraged about politics?
The dirty midnight deals? The soaring cost of living? The loving couples who wish to get married?
That last one doesn’t really fit.
But if you listen to the conservative voices within our mainstream parties – which, sadly, include Julia Gillard – love and marriage are our big looming political dangers.
They fear a voter backlash if they are seen to be too strongly supporting the human right – and it is a right – of gay and lesbian people to marry.
I don’t get it. Gay marriage is a vote-winner, not a vote-loser. Anybody who firmly believes gays should be excluded from mainstream society ain’t going to vote Labor anyway, at least not after Labor put an atheist sheila in charge and passed a carbon tax.
This week the Labor national conference in Sydney will debate the issue of marriage equality, part of a campaign led by a cross-factional grouping called Rainbow Labor, including determined young activist Neil Pharaoh.
