Monash residents are encouraged to voice their opinions on gay marriage, Federal member for Chisholm Anna Burke says.
Ms Burke will take part in a conscience vote about the controversial issue at a Labor Party conference next month and wants to hear people’s opinions.
“I’ll vote with what I think my community’s telling me,” she said.
Asked about her views on gay marriage, Ms Burke declined to make her opinion known.
“I am not publicly declaring a stance until I’ve seen legislation because I still want to ascertain what the community’s view is. I think if I declare my position, then people won’t tell me and I’m still interested in what the community’s got to say.”
Her office has received about 700 responses to the issue so far but she is waiting for more residents to come forward with a point of view.
Ms Burke hoped to receive several thousand responses.
