A TASMANIAN couple want to wait to marry in Tasmania rather than in the United Kingdom.
David Samson is Scottish but became an Australian citizen soon after he arrived in the country 22 years ago.
He had met Australian partner Kevin O’Loghlin while working in London.
The couple live at Richmond and plan to stay in Tasmania, where Mr O’Loghlin runs the Terrapin Puppet Theatre.
Marriage equality has passed the UK House of Commons and will be considered next in the House of Lords.
“I don’t see why we should have to go to a foreign country to get what we think is a basic right,” Mr Samson said.
Even if they married in the UK or in a High Commission, he said, there would be no advantage because it would not be recognised by Australian law.
They felt disappointed that the UK was moving ahead when Australia was not.
