Fr Bernard McGrath’s letter to the editor (“Foundations of family life under threat”, February 2) is yet another example of the clergy struggling to remain relevant in the face of their bigotry and ignorance.

Father McGrath speaks of “free choice” as a harbinger of selfishness.

The free choice he speaks of is not the ability to choose one’s sexuality or gender identity on a whim, like an outfit or a drink.

It is the choice between living as you are or living a lie – being ashamed of who you really are, because lesser minds cannot handle the truth.

Hardly a selfish decision. He speaks of people being unwilling to commit to the family unit for life – and yet he does so in the same breath as he decries the possibility of gay marriage.

Gay marriage is exactly the kind of life-long commitment to family life Father McGrath should wish to see, as is the possibility of gay people adopting children – but he and his peers are too blinded by their bigotry to see this.
