A SIGN at Somerset featuring a male and female gender symbol and two wedding rings has sparked controversy.
Members of the public contacted The Advocate this morning about the sign near the Cam River.
Wynyard resident Maire MacCana was upset after noticing the sign while driving past.
“I found it upsetting that an idea that I find discriminatory was displayed in such a public place,” she said.
“While I recognise that people believe that marriage should be between a man and woman, 10 per cent of the population are homosexual.”
The man who put up the sign, Graham Hodge from Cam River Signs, admitted he knew the sign would be controversial.
But Mr Hodge said it was “a subtle way of saying that man plus woman equals marriage.”
“There has been the pushing of an agenda to change the definition of marriage,” he said.
“It’s not about marriage equality, that’s a complete misnomer, it’s about destroying the institution of marriage completely.”
Mr Hodge, a Christian, said he was entitled to voice his opinion.
