Greens MLC Lynn MacLaren welcomed today’s findings from a NSW parliamentary inquiry saying that same-sex marriage in Western Australia is one step closer.
The results concluded that the NSW Parliament has the power to legislate on the subject of marriage, including same-sex marriage, opening up the pathway for all states in Australia to propose same-sex marriage legislation if they choose to do so.
“I am very encouraged by the cross-party committee finding and am actively seeking co-sponsors to my Same-Sex Marriage Bill for Western Australia,” Ms MacLaren said.
“Together we can deliver this long overdue reform.
“Of course, it would be great if the Federal Parliament took action as many other countries have done. This would achieve marriage equality for all Australians, which is fairer and more efficient. However, the way is clear for states to act now.
“As the Federal Parliament has failed to act on this issue, states will now be able to move forward on marriage equality.
“The time has come for Western Australia to embrace equality,” Ms MacLaren said. “I will work alongside advocates to pass state legislation.”
