A giant wedding cake was unveiled in Pitt St Mall today in support of marriage equality.
The three metres tall, two metres wide wedding cake was created by ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s in association with activist organisation Australian Marriage Equality.
Ben & Jerry’s will also be re-naming their iconic Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough flavour to ‘I DOugh, I DOugh’ and serving up free scoops to the public throughout the day.
Deputy national director of Australian Marriage Equality, Ivan Hinton said he was proud to see organisations across Sydney take up the cause of promoting the importance of same sex marriage.
“I think it is very exciting and we are getting the support from Ben & Jerry’s to make sure that the voters of Australia are aware which candidates are supportive of marriage equality and which aren’t,” he said.
“It is crucial to us that this social media campaign is as broad as possible and is as fun as possible because we know that marriage equality is a matter of time, it is not about if but about when. ”
Mr Hinton said Australian Marriage Equality had even changed the opinion of several Sydney candidates in terms of supporting marriage equality.
“Well with our website vote we have had an enormous amount of interest not only from members of the public but candidates themselves,” he said.
“They want to make sure their views are represented clearly and we have had some transitions because of the website. We also have had quite a lot of candidates who haven’t had a policy on marriage equality who have felt compelled to develop one because of the website.”
