Advocates have welcomed results from the ABC’s 2013 election vote compass which show a majority of Australians disagree that marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“Even though the question was about keeping marriage in its current form rather than about allowing same-sex couples to marry, the result still showed majority support for reform.”
“This indicates a high level of awareness among ordinary Australians about the discrimination inherent in current Australian marriage law.”
“Particularly pleasing is that 40% of Australians, including almost 60% of young Australians, strongly disagree that marriage should be restricted to heterosexual couples.”
The Voter Compass found that 52% of Australians disagree that marriage should only be between a man and a woman with 36% agreeing and 12% neutral.
The effective sample size for this question was over 570,000. Although it was an online poll the results have been weighted to more accurately represent Australian society.
