The Labor member for Maylands says she will introduce a private members bill into parliament next year to legalise same-sex marriage.
Lisa Baker says the bill follows a resolution passed at the State Labor conference earlier this year, which calls for the party to address marriage equality.
Ms Baker says she is confident she has the support of politicians from both sides.
“Not only in my party but across the parliament of WA the majority of our politicians would think this is an idea which has come of age and happy to follow the lead of other countries and other states,” she said.
Ms Baker says she will still push ahead with the bill, despite a legal challenge in the ACT to have the laws overturned.
The ACT became the first jurisdiction to pass the laws earlier this year, but it is now facing a legal challenge by the Federal Government in the High Court.
Ms Baker says she is undeterred by the challenge and says it provides an insight into how the laws can be drafted without being at odds with the constitution.
“As these bills have been presented in various parliaments, we have learnt more about the constitutional issues and what the way forward should look like.”
