Message for Australia in “Modern Family” marriage.
Marriage equality advocates say this Sunday’s episode of Modern Family, featuring the marriage of popular characters, Mitch and Cam, will boost support for marriage equality and send a strong message to Australia’s leaders about the urgency of the reform.
National Director of Australian Marriage Equality, Rodney Croome, said,
”This week’s groundbreaking Modern Family wedding is a reminder that love, commitment and family are what marriage equality is all about.”
”It is also a reminder that Australia is falling behind our closest allies like the US, the UK and New Zealand in not allowing same-sex couples to wed.”
“As Mitch and Cam’s wedding shows, same and opposite-sex partners share the same aspiration to love and be loved, and it’s time we also shared the same legal rights, responsibilities and recognition.”
“I call on politicians from all parties to have a heart and let loving couples like Mitch and Cam marry in Australia.”
Mr Croome urged supporters of marriage equality to write to an Australian Senate inquiry looking at the recognition of overseas same-sex marriages in Australia, as well as the impact of allowing same-sex marriage in countries like the US.
“If Mitch and Cam were to revisit Australia after marrying in California, their solemn vows of lifelong commitment would mean nothing and the law would see them as two single men.”
“If you want couples married overseas, like Mitch and Cam, to have their marriages respected in Australia, please write to the Senate inquiry currently examining just this issue.”
As well as banning the solemnisation of same-sex marriages in Australia, the federal Marriage Act explicitly precludes the recognition of overseas same-sex marriages in Australian law.
