JOHN KEY RE-ELECTION SHOWS CONSERVATIVES WHO SUPPORT MARRIAGE EQUALITY ARE REWARDED BY VOTERS
ADVOCATES PLEDGE RESPECTFUL AND MATURE DEBATE IN WAKE OF LAUNDY FEARS OF “VILIFICATION”

The re-election of the government of New Zealand PM, John Key, will encourage supporters of marriage equality within the Australian Coalition to press ahead.

Mr Key allowed his ruling National Party a free vote on the issue last year, enabling it to pass, and voted for the reform himself.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome said,

“John Key’s re-election with a stronger majority shows that conservatives who lead on marriage equality are rewarded by the electorate.”

“Supporters of marriage equality in the federal Coalition should take heart from John Key’s victory and press ahead to a free vote on the issue.”

Liberal MP, Craig Laundy, today backed away from his previous support for a free vote saying opponents of marriage equality fear being vilified.

In response Mr Croome said,

“Australian Marriage Equality renews its solemn pledge to conduct a mature and respectful debate, and urges groups opposed to the reform to do the same.”
