ACT Meteors captain Kris Britt and her fiance Nadine Hunt join thousands of Australian couples in waiting for marriage equality.
Hunt proposed to Britt on Manuka oval under lights just before Christmas.
Deputy Director of Australian Marriage Equality,Ivan Hinton-Teoh , said,
“The longer it takes for Australia to achieve marriage equality, the longer the list will be of couples like Kris and Nadine who are denied the ability to live their lives freely.”
“On behalf of the majority if Australians, I congratulate Kris and Nadine and sincerely hope that they will not wait too much longer.”
Attention is now focused on the Coalition and whether members will be allowed a free vote on David Leyonhjelm’s Freedom to Marry bill that is tabled in the Senate.
“We call on Coalition leadership to follow in the footsteps of our closest allies and recognise these relationships deserve equal dignity and recognition.”
Fairfax newspapers reported the couple wanted to be engaged before their families celebrated Christmas together.
“We’re planning on holding out until something can happen in Australia so both our families can come,” Britt said. “How long that will be, who knows?”
“There’s a lot of countries around the world that have changed the laws.”
“She took me out to the middle and said some really nice stuff, was starting to cry and I wasn’t sure what was happening, whether something bad happened or there as some negative news coming my way. But I got the hint when the ring came out,” Britt said. “It was a fantastic night.”
“It’s more to express that commitment,” Hunt said. “If there’s some way you can show someone how much they mean to you and really concrete that commitment in, well, I guess that was my way.”
“Whatever happens in Australia with legislation and stuff like that will happen. But at the moment we’ll just enjoy being engaged and having two nice pretty rings and continue on with our life like we usually do.”
