Wendy Harmer reveals her reason for being the voice of #EQUALITYCALLING
MPs have begun to receive calls through the new #EqualityCalling initiative. To hear a selection, click here or go to https://soundcloud.com/equalitycalling
#EqualityCalling is a hotline that allows marriage equality supporters to leave messages of support that are then automatically phoned through to the offices of their local federal MP and Senators.
According to Australian Marriage Equality, which is co-sponsoring the initiative along with Ben and Jerry’s, 200 messages were left in the first 24 hours after the hotline was opened on Friday. The total is now almost 400.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“One reason Australia lags behind other comparable countries on marriage equality is that high public support for the reform – 72% according to the most recent polling – hasn’t translated into support in parliament.”
“Equality Calling seeks to bridge the gap by directing personal messages from marriage equality supporters directly into the offices of their local federal politicians.”
“We’re over the moon with the response so far but more calls are needed if it is have a significant impact. Please leave a message if you haven’t already, and if you have, please ask five friends or family members to do the same.”
Wendy Harmer, the beloved Australian comedian who is the voice for #EqualityCalling, has revealed her reasons for being involved in the project. Wendy helps callers record their message and introduces the calls that are phoned through to politicians’ offices
“This is simply about equality. Beginning and end of argument for me.”
“As it stands the Marriage Act is discriminatory. If same sex couples wish to marry and experience all the joys and frustrations (!) it brings… or even if they don’t, I support the right of all Australians to enjoy the same freedom of choice I have.”
“I’m proud to lend my voice to this campaign. Call me now!”
