Call on Baird to lobby Abbott over free vote.
Marriage equality advocates say the swing to Labor, the Greens and independents in the NSW election is a sign of growing community support for marriage equality.
Australian Marriage equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“The overall swing to Labor in NSW carries with it a general message to the federal Coalition that it needs to move to the centre on issues like marriage equality.”
“The inner-city swing to the Greens and independent, Alex Greenwich, sends a very direct message to Labor that it must strengthen its stance on marriage equality.”
“The success of the Greens in northern NSW shows that strong support for marriage equality is not a barrier to getting elected in rural and regional Australia.”
The re-elected government of Mike Baird has a free vote on marriage equality, unlike its federal counterpart.
“I call on Mike Baird and other members of the NSW government to lobby Tony Abbott in support of a federal free vote”, Mr Croome said.
