Marriage equality advocates are disappointed the Coalition party room today failed to discuss a free vote on marriage equality the day after Labor leader, Bill Shorten, introduced a landmark marriage equality bill.
In the last few days Coalition MPs and Senators have received over 1,000,000 emails from supporters of reform calling for a free vote, while polling released today shows strong support in key, regional Coalition seats.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“The community is growing increasingly impatient with the Federal Government for not dealing with a free vote on marriage equality.”
“It’s clear from repeated polls, including polling in four key regional seats released by Australian Marriage Equality today, that Australians want the Coalition to allow a free vote.”
“The Government’s criticism of Bill Shorten’s stand for marriage equality is undermined by its failure to debate a free vote and show a path forward on the reform.”
“Marriage equality is easy, popular and doesn’t cost a cent. Let’s get it done.”
