Marriage equality advocates say support for the reform from cross-bench Senator, Ricky Muir, and National Party MP, Darren Chester, shows support is strong in country Austrlaia.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“Both Senator Muir and Darren Chester are based in rural Victoria and their support for marriage equality reflects increasing support for the reform across country Australia.”
“We are seeing more and more country Australians embracing marriage equality because it is consistent with their values of fairness and family.”
Mr Croome praised Senator Muir and Mr Chester for listening to the personal stories of their constituents who are directly affected by marriage equality.
“Senator Muir is right to highlight the deep psychological distress caused by exclusion from such a key legal and social institution as marriage.”
Mr Croome also said he believes it possible other Nationals members will follow Mr Chester.
“The pressure is now on the National Party, along with the Liberal Party, to allow a free vote on marriage equality.”
