Mexican supreme court rules for marriage equality.
83 Regional Victorian businesses back marriage equality.
The tiny Pacific jurisdiction of Pitcairn Island has legalised same-sex marriages.
The move comes two days after the Mexican Supreme Court opened the door to same-sex marriages across that country.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“The majority of Australians who support marriage equality will be bewildered and frustrated that we are falling behind places as diverse as Catholic Mexico and tiny Pitcairn Island.”
“Our international reputation for tolerance and a fair go will continue to suffer the longer marriage equality is delayed.”
Pitcairn Island is a British colony with its own assembly but a population of only 56, making it the world’s tiniest democracy.
The Mexican Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that same-sex couples should be able to marry in all of Mexico’s 31 states. Previously, marriage equality prevailed in two states plus the federal district of Mexico City.
Meanwhile, efforts to obtain marriage equality in Australia continue with the publication today of a two-page advertisement in the Bendigo Advertiser featuring support for marriage equality from 83 businesses from regional Victoria.
Ad organiser, Jayson Tayeh said,
“This very visible public statement by so many regional Victorian businesses sends a strong message to our politicians that the community backs marriage equality and the time for reform has come.”
A list of the companies involved, and a copy of the ad itself, are included below.
