Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, has confirmed his position that marriage equality is a matter for parliament.
In response to a question in parliament today from Tasmanian independent, Andrew Wilkie, asking Mr Abbott to rule out a plebiscite on marriage equality, the Prime Minister said, “my position on this question is well known”.
In the wake of the successful Irish referendum on marriage equality, Mr Abbott repeatedly said marriage equality in Australia is a matter for parliament to resolve.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, welcomed Mr Abbott’s stance.
“With support in parliament growing every day, a plebiscite would serve only to delay marriage equality until after the next election.”
“Because a plebiscite would not bind politicians it would effectively be an elaborate, expensive, polarising and unnecessary opinion poll on an issue that we already know has strong majority support.”
