Advocates have praised Victorian Liberal MP, Jason Wood, for declaring his support for marriage equality, saying it proves Liberals won’t be silenced on the issue.
Today, Mr Wood, who represents the electorate of La Trobe in eastern Melbourne, announced he will support marriage equality after polling his electorate on the issue. The announcement comes just days after the Coalition party room decided to bind all its members to vote against marriage equality.
Rodney Croome, Australian Marriage Equality national director, said,
“We applaud Jason Wood for standing up for his electorate despite the unprincipled decision of his party room.”
“Mr Wood’s declaration of support for marriage equality shows MPs and their communities can’t be silenced on this issue.”
“As more Coalition MPs come out in support of marriage equality and more commit to cross the floor, the Coalition’s opposition to a free vote becomes ever more untenable.”
“To prevent a local member from representing their community is a cruel and electorally disadvantages strategy.”
