Mr. Abbott and his Cabinet may think the issue of marriage equality for same sex couples has been swept under the carpet until the next election (or whenever he chooses to end the discrimination) but he is wrong. PFLAG parents have lost faith in Mr. Abbott and his Cabinet with their constant deferral of addressing the right for our sons and daughters.

We believe a “true” Free Vote is the only way. It costs zero dollars and could pass if the Liberals had the freedom to vote freely with legislation being amended by Christmas.

A Plebiscite is unnecessary, expensive and non binding. Additionally, it will only confirm what the fair minded people of this country are consistently saying, which is they either support or are not threatened by same sex couples having the right to marry their partner of choice.

A Referendum in Australia would be more difficult and could become a legal nightmare and would still have to go back to the Parliament for the final decision

As parents we are concerned about the “Hate Campaigns” that will occur with the lead up to a Plebiscite or Referendum. It is distressing not only for our children but us, their parents.

We are tired of our sons and daughters being treated as second class citizens. We are tired of the varied mental health issues many experience because of this discrimination. And we are tired of being told their relationships aren’t worthy including the justifications about why same sex marriage is wrong by opponents. Finally we are tired of this government’s inaction. It’s time for Mr Abbott to either legislate or resign.

So PFLAG parents are going to Canberra to talk with MP’s and Senators who will pass our message on to those who don’t have the courage to personally listen to our stories or those of our loved ones.
