Australian Marriage Equality has welcomed support for marriage equality from Christine Forster, who is the sister of Opposition leader, Tony Abbott.
Ms Forster spoke about her support in the context of her same-sex relationship with Virginia Edwards to the Australian newspaper (full report here).
Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said the story highlighted the respectful and loving way Mr Abbott has responded to his sister, and hoped her support would have an impact on him:
“Advocacy from loved ones is by far the most effective way of changing hearts and minds”
Mr Greenwich said Ms Forster coming out and declaring support for marriage equality will have an impact on the progression of the debate within the coalition:
“Ms Forster proves the point that this reform is about the importance of family, love, and equality, not politics”
“With a clear majority of Australians supporting reform, same-sex couples are more comfortable than ever in being public and proud. This will only increase, and blocking this reform will just get harder and harder for the Coalition.”
