Whatever else happens tonight, I’m willing to predict that this is the last presidential election in our history where a major party candidate can run successfully by opposing same-sex marriage.
And it’s about time.
If President Obama is reelected, it will — at least in some measure — be a validation of his repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and his endorsement — however late it came — of marriage equality. And if Americans renew the President’s contract for another four years, he’ll have an opportunity to further influence the public discourse and appoint Supreme Court justices who will apply the Constitution’s guarantee of equal treatment under the law to same-sex couples seeking to marry.
