Tonight, Australian time, the UK House of Commons is expected to overwhelmingly pass legislation allowing same-sex couples to marry
Comment available:
– several Australian same-sex couples who intend to marry in the UK are available for comment and can be contacted through AME national convener Rodney Croome on 0409 010 668
– Mr Croome is also available for comment
– a media door-stop will be held in Parliament House tomorrow (time to be announced)
Importance of the legislation:
– it has the support of the Conservative Prime Minister, David Cameron, and a large part of his Party who have been allowed a conscience vote
– it also has overwhelming support from the Labour Party including Labour leader, Ed Miliband
– it highlights the continued opposition of Tony Abbott to a conscience vote and Julia Gillard to marriage equality
– Australia may soon be the last developed, English-speaking country not to move forward on the issue
– it will allow Australian couples in UK civil partnerships to be legally married, highlighting their lack of recognition in Australia.
