It worked in the US state of Vermont, then again in the UK – and now Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is supporting local reform to allow marriage equality with a new flavour being launched today.
Partnering with the Australian Marriage Equality campaign, the ice cream company is renaming its Choc Chip Cookie Dough flavour, now calling it I DOugh, I DOugh during this election campaign season.
Unveiled this morning for the first time, here’s what the tubs look like. There’s two versions, one showing a male couple (shown above), and one showing a female couple, below.
“As a social justice company, we’re immensely proud to support an issue that embodies so many of our core values,” says Ben & Jerry’s ‘Down Udder’ spokesperson Kalli Swaik.
“We champion equality above all else, believing that everyone in a loving relationship should be able to mark their commitment to each other in marriage, regardless of gender or sexual orientation.”
Marriage equality won’t be decided by one party or leader, she points out, “but together our collective voices can make a huge difference to equal rights in Australia. We’re thrilled to be working with Australian Marriage Equality in the run up to September’s election, hopefully making 2013 Australia’s last marriage equality election.”
Ben & Jerry’s campaign kicks off this morning at 9am, with a giant wedding cake to be created in Sydney’s Pitt Street Mall, which members of the public will be invited to ascend in a demonstration of support for marriage equality.
The ice cream brand comes from the US state of Vermont, and before same-sex marriages became legal there in 2009, the ice cream company renamed one of its flavours Hubby Hubby – shown below.
And last year they had marriage equality licked again, this time in England by renaming their Apple Pie flavour Apple-y Ever After.
