Since launching in August, the show has explored a number of social and political issues and in next week’s episode, we will see a female couple in their 40s tie the knot – just two weeks after the ACT became the first jurisdiction in Australia to pass laws legalising same-sex marriages
“Obviously we didn’t know that was going to happen when we were filming six months ago, or a year ago when they wrote it,” lead actress in the show, Jessica Tovey said.
“However we knew as we were filming we knew that it was a topic that would resonate with a lot of people.
“It is incredible that only two weeks ago we had the ATC supporting it and now it is being debated in NSW. It is kind of amazing how unbelievably topical it is now.”
It is Tovey’s character Dani whose mother is tying the knot in next week’s episode.
“Although they have remained in contact, Dani has always found it difficult having her mum leave her dad for another woman,” Tovey said.
“It has been handled well because you get to see both sides point of view.
“It is not that she is homophobic, it is personal, it is her mum and it brings up feelings of her being abandoned.”
Tovey personally backs marriage equality, having grown up with gay friends and family.
“Absolutely I do,” she said.
“I grew up with friends who had same sex parents and I personally have many friends and family members who are gay themselves so it is definitely something I support.”
The Wonderland cast are just a few of many celebrities who have thrown their support behind gay marriage.
Olivia Newton John, Kylie Minogue and Magda Szubanski have all used their celebrity status to draw attention to the topic in past years.
