A survey of South Australian election candidates by Australian Marriage Equality has found the Liberal member for Adelaide, Rachel Sanderson, is a supporter of South Australia leading the nation on marriage equality.
The survey also found strong support for the reform among Labor and Green candidates.
Australian Marriage Equality, national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“Marriage equality in South Australia can only be achieved with cross-party support so I hope to see other Liberals following Ms Sanderson’s lead.”
“There is more support for marriage equality among South Australian election candidates than ever before which bodes well for the state leading the way on marriage equality should the federal parliament again fail to pass the reform.”
According to constitutional experts such as Prof George Williams, last year’s High Court decision to strike down the ACT’s Marriage Equality Act does not rule out a state passing a differently-framed law such as the ones previously introduced in South Australia by Greens MLC, Tammy Franks, and Labor MHA, Susan Close.
