Marriage equality advocates have congratulated Labor on its election in Victoria and say they are keen to work with the new government to see overseas same-sex marriages recognised in Victoria.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“We congratulate the Victorian Labor Party for its election on Australia’s most progressive platform of equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people.”
“This includes the recognition of overseas same-sex marriages in Victorian law.”
“We look forward to working with the new Victorian Government to ensure same-sex relationships are accorded full dignity and equality under the law.”
Tasmania, Queensland and NSW already recognise overseas same-sex marriages as state civil partnerships.
