Advocates have applauded new Tasmanian Governor, Kate Warner, for her public support of marriage equality.
Speaking to the Hobart Mercury, Professor Warner, who was formerly Dean of the University of Tasmania Law School and head of the Tasmanian Law a Reform Institute, said she is a strong supporter of marriage equality.
She also talked proudly about her contribution to the Tasmanian campaigns to decriminalise homosexuality and allow same-sex couples to adopt.
Convener of Tasmanians United for Marriage Equality, Andrew Badcock, said,
“I applaud Tasmania’s new governor, Kate Warner, for publicly supporting marriage equality.”
“Poll after poll shows a majority of Tasmanians support marriage equality so, at one level, Professor Warner is simply reflecting the will of the people.”
“But what matters even more about her support is that it is inspired by a belief in social justice and equitable laws.”
“As governor, Professor Warner must be above politics. But marriage equality isn’t about politics. It’s about core Australian values like fairness and inclusion.”
“As governor, she has a duty to defend these values and always guide us gently back to them.”
Prof Warner told the Mercury,
“I’ve always had a lot of interest in matters of social justice. I’ve been interested in gay law reform, the rights of victims, especially victims of sexual assault and domestic violence.”
She went on to say she is a strong supporter of marriage equality and opponent of mandatory sentencing.
“The role of governor gives you the opportunity to provide encouragement for change in those areas”, she said.
