Advocates welcome support from Anna Burke and Dio Wang.
Marriage equality advocates have welcomed the Prime Minister’s green light for more cross-party co-operation on the issue, and have hailed support from Labor MP, Anna Burke, and Palmer United Senator, Dio Wang.
In Question Time today Mr Abbott said, “If our parliament were to make a big decision on a matter such as this it ought to be owned by the parliament and no particular party.”
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“The way forward on marriage equality is for supporters to work across party lines, so we welcome the Prime Minister giving the green light to cross-party co-operation.”
“But a pre-condition for cross-party co-operation is a Coalition a free vote, so we ask the Prime Minister to move for one as soon as possible.”
Mr Croome welcomed separate announcements from former Speaker, Anna Burke and Palmer United Senator, Dio Wang, that they support marriage equality.
“We welcome Anna Burke’s support for marriage equality because it will send a positive message to Labor members who have yet to support the reform that they should get their skates on.”
“Senator Wang‘s support for marriage equality is an indication of growing support for the reform across the parliament and the community.”
“By our estimation marriage equality is supported by a slim majority in the Senate and is only just short of a majority in the House of Representatives.”
