“For many same-sex partners the right to marry is about affirming the value of family and tradition, not undermining it, and they should have equal access to the Prime Minister to make this point.”
– Alex Greenwich, AME National Convener
Marriage equality advocates have called on Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to meet with supporters of the reform in the wake of a her meeting with Christian leaders who oppose same-sex marriage.
Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said:
“Julia Gillard must show she is a Prime Minister for all Australians by meeting with advocates of marriage equality including the families of same-sex couples and those Australian religious leaders who support same-sex marriage”, Mr Greenwich said.
“Opponents of marriage equality have every right to be heard, but to be fair Julia Gillard should also meet with those same-sex couples and their families who are actually affected by discrimination.”
In recent days Ms Gillard has said her opposition to same-sex marriage is based on her respect for family and tradition.
In response Mr Greenwich said:
“For many same-sex partners the right to marry is about affirming the value of family and tradition, not undermining it, and they should have equal access to the Prime Minister to make this point.”
Mr Greenwich went on to say groups supporting marriage equality have requested meetings with Ms Gillard on numerous occasions without success.
“Tony Abbott has met with equality advocates and even Cardinal Pell says he is willing to, so Julia Gillard has no excuses.”
