Advocates have welcomed a decision by Kingborough Council in southern Tasmania to endorse marriage equality and write to the federal government expressing its support.
The Council joins about 50 other councils nationwide after it voted 5 to 3 to support a marriage equality motion.
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“A recent door-to-door survey in Taroona found 71% for marriage equality.”
“I applaud Kingborough Council’s decision to represent this strong community support and provide leadership on an issue critical to so many people.”
“I call on other Tasmanian councils to follow Kingborough’s lead on a reform that will strengthen relationships and foster great inclusion.”
Hobart City Council voted unanimously to support marriage equality earleir this year.
