Advocates have welcomed the Tasmanian Law Society’s support for marriage equality.
In a statement released today Law Society President, Matthew Verney, said,
“It is important that all members of our community are treated equally by the law. At the moment, so far as marriage is concerned, that is not the case.”
Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,
“The Law Society’s statement highlights the importance of marriage equality for ensuring all citizens are treated equally.”
“When such an important law as the Marriage Act enshrines discrimination and harbours prejudice the entire legal system is brought into disrepute.”
“I particularly welcome the Law Society’s point that a plebiscite hasn’t been necessary to reform marriage law in the past and shouldn’t be necessary now.”
The Law Society’s statement comes just days after the Launceston Chamber of Commerce became the first in Australia to endorse marriage equality as a way to improve workplace productivity and boost the economy.
