Marriage equality advocates have welcomed the result of a survey conducted in the regional seat of Gilmore by Liberal MP Ann Sudmalis which showed 62% of the local community support reform.
Ivan Hinton-Teoh, deputy national director of Australian Marriage Equality, said,
“Clearly, this is a great result and it shows not only majority support for marriage equality, but how highly-motivated supporters are to express their views in favour of reform.”
“Long held preconceptions are being challenged across Australia by local surveys that ultimately show majority support for marriage equality.”
Local advocate, Dawn Hawkins, said,
“This survey is the latest to demonstrate that attitudes have changed in the country and city alike. Australians support marriage equality and just want the government to get on with it.”
“It’s clear that our community supports this reform and will be looking to Ms Sudmalis to reflect the will of the community when the issue comes to a vote in parliament.”
Daniel Comensoli, an organiser of a recent local marriage equality forum, said,
“Thanks to everyone who expressed their support for marriage equality, for telling their own personal stories and speaking with their friends, family members and co-workers to get them involved in the campaign. Without them this result would not have been possible.”
