In the final days of the election campaign, Australian Marriage Equality (AME) has today reiterated its long held view that marriage equality should be resolved by a vote in the Parliament and not through a costly and unnecessary plebiscite.
“Both major parties are going to the next election putting forward a way to achieve marriage equality. The Coalition’s plan is an unnecessary and costly plebiscite, and Labor’s plan is a free vote”, Australian Marriage Equality National Spokesperson, Dr Shirleene Robinson said.
“Over the last two months, AME has run its largest ever national election campaign in more than 30 seats across all states to shape the hearts and minds of MPs and communities across Australia.
“We believe marriage equality should be resolved by a simple vote in the Parliament and so it’s important that there is an increased support in the next parliament to ensure marriage becomes a reality for every Australian.
“We understand the comments attributed to Tiernan Brady in The Australian today have been taken out of context and in no way diminish this position”, Australian Marriage Equality National Spokesperson, Dr Shirleene Robinson said.
“We know that a plebiscite is legally unnecessary and very expensive and should be avoided.” Dr Robinson said.
“Our ‘vote for equality’ site enables every Australian to make informed decisions about where their candidates sit on marriage equality.https://www.australianmarriageequality.org/vote4equality/
“Our Australian values are based on a fair go and respect for all and its important that these values are represented in our Parliament”, Dr Robinson concluded.
